On January 9, 1914 three young men founded one of the greatest organizations on the face of the planet, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. I had the oportunity to speak with members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity in Fort Walton Beach, Florida just a few weeks ago. Members of the graduate chapter, collegiate chapter, and members of Zeta Phi Beta were in attendance at their annual Founder's Day luncheon.
I spoke with them about the vision of their founder (and my founder), Abram Langston Taylor, in forming Phi Beta Sigma. It is recorded in the Crescent Magazine that the idea of Phi Beta Sigma came to Brother Taylor after having a conversation with a random stranger in a store parking lot. The stranger spoke with Bro. Taylor about the state of the fraternities and sorrorities in place at Howard University. The conversation sparked an idea in Bro. Taylor -- to found Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. In other words, the idea of founding the greatest fraternity on the planet did not come from a dream or a vision, but from a random conversation with a complete stranger.
So often we ignore stangers. Most times it is because of fear or pride. However, in my life, I have found that my most meaningful opportunities have come from conversations with complete strangers! You never know what "seeds" a will stranger mplace in you from a casual conversation! In fact, it was a random stranger that informed me of the recent $500 million dollar Powerball ticket!
Make it a point to socialize with people. NETWORK! Go out of your way to meet new people. If Bro. Taylor had never spoken with this stranger, would he have still come up with the idea to found Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity-- an international fraternity boasting over 200,000 members world wide?? Who knows? My point is, GO OUT OF YOUR WAY AND TALK TO A STRANGER. NETWORK 2016!
